Wet Weather Reminder

Don’t forget to bring along your reusable grocery bags or totes to avoid the soggy demise of our paper bags if you’ll be hitting the elements on the way home. Even just getting to the car during this soggy season could be lethal for your produce — we want it to make it all the way home — not playing a game of 10 pin on the sidewalk!

An heirloom gallete seems like the perfect way to use your Littlest Acre heirloom tomatoes this week with this cooler, rainy weather as it shifts to comfort food season. Not to worry, you can use cherry tomatoes with this recipe too.

If you’re short on time, or gluten free and find pie crust making as hard as I do – pick up a ready made pie crust at the store to make this delicious dish. I buy the gluten free crusts on sale and stock up the freezer when their a “good” deal.

If dairy free or vegan, Violife and a few other brands offer a substitute cream cheese. I might skip the goat cheese if I couldn’t find another alternative and increase the cream cheese.

Find My Moon Stone’s Kitchen recipe here.

Fried Red Tomatoes — A Juicy Southern Twist on a Beloved Classic might become a fall staple in our house.

Just be sure your tomatoes is still ripe and firm or it may fall apart in the pan.

This recipe is easily adaptable for the gluten free crowd with GF flour and GF panko crumbs.

Find the recipe here.

Corn on the cob in the oven? This seems like a recipe to try tonight! They say it takes just like it’s done on the BBQ.

Find the recipe here to cook up your Michell’s corn.

Maple Dijon Roasted Carrots and Apples are perfect as a side dish and can also be tossed together with a bowl of greens or some sauteed cabbage; terrific in a wrap with rice and chicken or into a bowl of quinoa. It’s a versatile addition to your menu planning.
Find Alternative Dish’s recipe here.

Healthy Fitness Meals shares their Creamy Vegetarian Tortilla Soup here.

It’s a great soup for using up left over veggies in the fridge, especially the ones starting to wrinkle. You’ll never notice a wrinkle in a soup!

This recipe also provides directions for using an Instant Pot.

Ths Braised White Beans & Greens soup is budget friendly and a great way to use up extra veg. It’s quick and easy for those nights you get home late. Those dried out bread ends are perfect vessels once toasted and used to scoop up this hearty meal. You can find a Virtual Vegan’s recipe here.

Youth are back at Sandown for field trips! As summer winds down, our Growing Young Farmers program continues in full force into fall. This is the first year we have a designated 1-acre farm space to use for this programming. It’s great to expand beyond the teaching garden for more hands-on learning activities in regenerative agriculture. Last week, we had 60 Grade 9 students from @oakbayhighschool harvesting and pruning tomatoes, weeding, and harvesting sunflower seeds. 🌻
Thank you to our supporters for making this wonderful work possible. @victoriafoundation @farm2cafeteria @unitedway_bc @san_pen_communityfoundation and District of Sooke. You can support this program or book a group at the link. 🌸
