Wet Weather Reminder

Don’t forget to bring along your reusable grocery bags or totes to avoid the soggy demise of our paper bags if you’ll be hitting the elements on the way home. Even just getting to the car during this soggy season could be lethal for your produce — we want it to make it all the way home — not playing a game of 10 pin on the sidewalk!

Scalloped Potatoes & Butternut Squash with Leeks is a cross between comfort food and gourmet enough to serve at a dinner party.

You can find the recipe on food.com here.

Butternut Squash Casserole with Leeks, Prosciutto, and Thyme is a little bit savory bread pudding and a little bit veggie gratin. Either way, it’s delicious comfort food.

This Carmalized Onion Butternut Tart, shared by Jennie Recipes, is the perfect pairing of squash and caramelized onions. It’s great for serving guests and rich in Vitamin A & C, which support immune systems and eye health.

You can make this ahead of time so that you can be ready for guests in a more relaxed atmosphere.

Cooking with Chef Alba refers to this recipe as a warm hug.

Some notes about this recipe:

Note

  • Leeks are a member of the onion family and add a subtly sweet flavor that pairs beautifully with mushrooms.
  • Gruyere cheese is known for its creamy texture and nutty flavor, perfect for a decadent pasta dish.
  • For a touch of heat, consider adding a pinch of red pepper flakes when adding the garlic.
  • This dish can be made vegetarian by substituting vegetable broth for the white wine.
  • Leftovers can be stored in the refrigerator for up to 3 days and reheated gently on the stovetop or in a microwave.

What do you do with left over parsley? Chimichurri, of course!

Chimichurri
Chimichurri is a typical Argentinean marinade/condiment – usually served with grilled steak, another Argentinean speciality. The most important part of Chimichurri is using lots of fresh parsley, and since I had it on hand this recipe is a nod to this flavorful green sauce.

1 cup packed fresh parsley leaves
1 TB white wine vinegar
2 tsp minced garlic
2 stalks scallion, chopped
Ground fresh pepper and dash of salt
1 TB hot water
1/3 cup olive oil

Find the recipe and directions here.

This is a quick and easy side dish for those busy week nights. The lemon & parsley combination blends well together. You’ll be licking your lips, but as with any parsley recipe, keep your tooth brush handy!

Who says a Tomato Orzo Salad with Tahini Dressing is only for summer. It’s a perfect side or lunch. The caramelized vegetables add a rich, warm flavour to this now fall salad!

Honey Lime Grilled Cantaloupe is a quick way to add a little lightness to these dark, dreary days without the chill of our usual summer treats. The sweet and sour of this honey-lime pairing will give you a quick lift.

We sing most Wednesdays, make sure you check https://www.meetup.com/sing-together-victoria/ for the current schedule.

Come connect with others, learn songs of community, and experience the joy of singing in a welcoming and relaxed environment. All songs are taught by call and response. No experience needed – even if you never sing, just bring your enthusiasm! Let’s grow something beautiful together!

What if I can’t sing? Everyone can sing in this group, even if you ‘never sing’, ‘don’t have a good voice’, or only sing in the car alone. All voices are welcome and we would love to have you there!
What songs do we sing? We sing a wide variety of short songs, often in rounds or harmony. They have themes of community, nature, joy, and hope among many others. For more details, see the website – https://singtogether.ca/songs-we-sing/

I host these as a free community building event. Donations to support the program are appreciated to help pay the locations where we gather and other costs. E-transfer is preferred (to singforjoy135@gmail.com) since donations in person can distract from the event 🙂 Thank you so much for attending! I look forward to singing with you. Learn more here.

For the witching hour descends, and ‘tis the time of night

That graves, all gaping wide,

let forth their sprites

In the church-way paths to glide.

Stumble through the fairy circle and join us down the darkened paths for A Midsummer Nightmare: an unsettling descent into the mad world of fay.

The fairies weave spells, drawing you further into the woods. Once familiar paths now twist around you, and the stories you thought you knew now invoke terror. What strange creatures will you discover lurking around every corner? And what will happen if they trap you here forever in the fairy realm?

This 30 minute Shakespearean horror experience moves down the paths of Mount Tolmie. We invite you to walk with us and listen closely to words taken directly from Shakespeare’s canon that become more and more fractured the farther you wander. Please come dressed for the weather as the experience is entirely outside and will run rain or shine.

This outdoor walking experience is a fundraiser for the Greater Victoria Shakespeare Festival, done in collaboration with Alectoria Productions– come see some familiar faces as they perform amongst the darkened trees. All proceeds go to supporting the artists involved during our winter months of slumber.

Recommended age 12+, but ultimately up to caregiver’s discretion. Content Warnings: gore, loud noises, screaming/yelling, cannibalism, flashing lights, depictions of violence.

Accessibility note: all paths are gravel and wheelchair accessible. Parking is available up and down the mountain. The walking experience is quick paced, and you will not be standing in one location for more than 5 minutes at a time. No seating is provided. For more information look here.

Everyday till the 29th of October | 5:45pm / 6:25pm / 7pm | Mt. Tolmie Summit | $15-$20

Experience Shakespeare like never before in this 30-minute outdoor horror walk through Mount Tolmie’s darkened paths, where familiar fairy tales twist into nightmares and the fay realm threatens to trap you forever.

Every word we speak about the land carries spirit. A land acknowledgement can be more than a formality—it can be a living offering, a story, a promise.
Join us for “Beyond Words: How to Write Meaningful Land Acknowledgements in 2025”, a free online workshop where we slow down, listen deeply, and learn to root our acknowledgements in relationships. Guided by Mi’kmaq Knowledge Keeper Jude Benoit, we’ll explore what it means to speak with the land, not just about it. Through reflection, writing, and gentle creative practice, you’ll craft acknowledgements that honor place, people, and responsibility.
This workshop is a space for humility, creativity, and connection, where words meet the earth and acknowledgements become acts of care.
Guest Facilitator: Jude Benoit Jude is a Mi’kmaq environmentalist from Ktaqamkuk (Newfoundland), deeply rooted in traditional knowledge and community. Raised in a small Mi’kmaq fishing community, Jude is passionate about caring for our lands and oceans and currently works as a community organizer for Neighbours United’s Defend Our Island campaign. Their insights on Two-Eyed Seeing—balancing Indigenous and Western knowledge—will guide our conversation.
