Feature Farmer

FED Urban Agriculture supports food security by creating garden spaces, delivering educational programs, and promoting urban agriculture. Their goals are food access – helping vulnerable populations grow food; garden creating – establishing gardens on underutilized urban land; and education – creating low-barrier learning opportunities.

“FED Urban Farm is not just a farm. It is a community asset that serves to connect and engage people of all walks of life with our local food system, demonstrating sustainable and accessible forms of agriculture in the heart of our city.”

– Ash Whelan, Program & Operations Manager

Scallion Pancakes (green onion) are a quick and frugal meal to make for breakfast, lunch or dinner with very few ingredients. Click on the photo to go to Oh My Food Recipes step by step photo instructions demonstrating this perfect meal for when you’re on the fly. They’re also perfect for making in larger batches and freezing for later. Reheat them in the oven at 375 F for 2-4 minutes, checking to be sure they’re heated through.  They’re delicious dipped in chili oil or sauce, Thai sweet chili sauces or hoisin…or maybe a garlic aioli?

Note: *North Star Organics chives would be a great substitute for green onions, if you run out.

Wet Weather Reminder — Bring your cloth bags or totes! Don’t forget to bring along your reusable grocery bags or totes to avoid the soggy demise of our paper bags if you’ll be hitting the elements on the way home. Even just getting to the car during this soggy season could be lethal for your produce — we want it to make it all the way home — not playing a game of 10 pin on the sidewalk!

Fernwood Community Centre is looking for garden volunteers to help restore our native meadow! Are you interested in learning about native plants and meadow restoration? We need your help!

We’re looking for regular garden volunteers to help steward our native meadow, keeping weeds at bay to help the Camas and other native plants get established.

Volunteer work parties will happen every month, & ideally Meadow Stewards will keep an eye on the meadow in between work parties.

If you’d like to find out more, and get on our volunteer list, email jesse@fernwoodnrg.ca

It’s that time again. Vic West friends – limited resources or no access to a garden – apply now at the link below.

The City of Victoria – Local Government Parks department has been busy growing thousands of baby vegetables to give you for FREE this Spring.
Vic West will be distributing them Friday May 16th, from 10:30am while supplies last. [usually about 2 hours] at the Community Centre on Craigflower Rd.
An area identified as a barrier to more residents participating is access to a place to PUT these seedlings.
To help combat this, in 2025 Victoria West Community Association is collaborating with @FED Urban Ag to provide a limited number of “grow kits” to local residents. Each kit will have 3 grow bags filled with soil, extra seeds and information on how to succeed in combating personal #foodinsecurity.
These kits are perfect for anyone with a patio, or garden space without much actual soil [as is typical in parts of Vic West with all the rock!]
Everyone is welcome to apply, however as we expect demand to outstrip supply we have a quick survey to identify those most in need. If we still have too many applicants, we will have a lottery for the recipients, who will be notified early May.
Bags will be ready for collection the week prior to the seedling distribution so you can get set up!
APPLICATIONS CLOSE 30 APRIL 6PM.
